A Ford truck and a vision
In 1967, Mel and Betty Wengerd began a journey establishing
the grass roots of a transportation business that today
spans more than three decades and another generation of
the Wengerd family.
It began with the need to earn an honest buck in the midst
of a troubling economy in Millersburg, Ohio. Mel Wengerd
valued a hard day’s work and he needed to earn a
living to support his family. In Mel’s case, necessity
was the father of invention. He knew local pallet
shops were having difficulty hauling for their
customers. So, Mel hitched a 22’ flatbed to his 1966
Ford truck and soon he was in the transportation business.
The family business is born
Initially, Mel had three customers: Bunker Hill Pallet,
now GRH Forest Products; Plains Pallet, now Mt. Eaton Pallet;
and Fountain Nook Lumber, which is no longer in business.
For the first year, Mel loaded out of Holmes and Wayne
counties, and purchased equipment as funds allowed.
In 1969, Mel purchased a semi-tractor and trailer and
began hauling lumber for Brenneman Lumber in Mt. Vernon,
Ohio. The same year, the business incorporated under the
name Berlin Transportation in honor of the small town central to the growing business — Berlin, Ohio. The next year, Mel purchased
another semi-tractor and trailer and continued to build
the foundation of a transportation business.
In March 2003, Mel handed over the reins of Berlin Transportation.
Today, sons Tom, Ken and Marlin Wengerd continue
to serve local and regional transportation needs with the
same character and vision as their father and founder, Mel Wengerd.
